Are you seeking an engineering career which will also let the artist in you take lead and have fun?
If yes, then a career in VLSI Design is waiting for you!
VLSI Design is the art & science of planning and designing large & complex electronics systems on a tiny piece of silicon, called the chip. The creative side of an individual becomes prominent when he/she is required to make a circuit design along with some geometrical designs for printing on silicon. Simultaneously, this field also involves technology and engineering to realize the designs.
Skills & Challenges:
Normally, a VLSI verification engineer checks the functionality and performance compliance of a design with respect to the given specifications and ensures that the schemes are correct. A verification engineer is obliged to develop a verification environment which simulates the real-world deployment scenario, also known as Verification Intellectual Property (VIP) for the design under test. He should also capture the failure models for the design if any.
There are Two Types of Verification:
1.Functional Verification – This is the task of securing that the design adheres to the specification. It tries to answer the question “Does the suggested design do what it is intended to?”
2.Timing Verification – This task verifies whether the design is fast enough to run without any glitches at the targeted clock time. It can be divided into two categories:
Static Timing Analysis – (STA) is a method of estimating the expected timing of a digital circuit without needing simulation.
Dynamic timing verification – This confirms that an ASIC design is speedy enough to go on without any errors at the targeted clock rate. This is achieved by simulating the design files used to manufacture the integrated circuit (IC) design. Unlike static timing analysis, which has a similar aim as dynamic timing verification, dynamic verification doesn’t require simulating the true functionality of the IC. The real challenge of the job is that a VLSI engineer, seldom, has the liberty of being incorrect. The cost of designing, fabrication, and testing is remarkably high, sometimes even amounting to billions of USD.
A mistake made by the engineer will cost a business dearly. In other words, there is no room for failure in this role. This job position is challenging and yet, can be fulfilling when one directly contributes towards bringing out a high-performance system to be used in like medical instruments, smart-phones, automotive controls, and defense applications.
